The noble and serine fox seems to keep their own counsel and secrets. This small oil painting reflects the quiet nobility of a queen. As a spirit guide or shape shifter, they walk through civilization gathering awe and inspiration.

In a near death experience and in a coma, I had a white tiger as a guide in a spiritual dream. This small oil piece was the start of three small oil paintings that explored animal guides and shapeshifters. In the dream, the tiger was white alabaster with a turquoise third eye at the lotus fountain.

This was part of a series of small oil paintings done as I explored the thought of animal spirit guides. I also thought of people that can see spirits or shape shifters and what that person would look like. Would they have a resemblance to the observant wise owl? Can we sense if someone is a shapeshifter by their personality traits? Are they guided by certain kinds of animal spirits?

This was an image created for a card game about CRYPTIDS that was never finished or released. It is a painting of the mysterious creature called “The Chupacabra”, which means goat sucker. This creature has been reported to have been seen all over Latin America and Puerto Rico. The first public mention of this creature in the USA was on the TV series Bonanza, which ran from 1959 to 1973.

This was painted for a card game that was all about capturing CRYPTIDS (creatures that may or may not exist). This card game was never finished or released. This is a painting of the legendary character Spring Heeled Jack, a creature that plagued Victorian era England for decades starting in 1837.

I always wonder what other civilizations in the universe are like. When looking into the night sky seeing many stars and looking back in time I’ve thought about everyday life of aliens and that they tend to do some of the same types of activities that we do. I try to give these types of paintings a realistic yet alien feel to draw in the viewer and lead them to create their own scenarios of everyday alien life.

This was a painting I did for a book where I was able to explore the idea of zero g and the fun one would have. All kinds of images came to mind, of people floating around. But I thought it can’t be all work, and maybe in this futuristic scenario there would be families who could not only work, but live and play as well, with zero g zones being sectioned off for entertainment.

One day I was thinking of Quarks and subatomic particles. I wondered what it would be like to be inside a particle accelerator. I thought of what it would be like to be inside something so small, like in the movie “Fantastic Voyage”, where humans were shrunk so small they could enter the body’s bloodstream. Many times my paintings will become an amalgam of different thoughts that coalesce into visual harmony.

This was a personal piece. This is a piece about becoming an adult. First, I wanted to invoke a feeling of the ocean, a sense of time moving backwards and forwards, like waves.
The main character is coming of age and starting to understand that she can no longer hide behind her teddy bear. Her arm being behind her as if she’s protecting the bear symbolizes her moment of strength to be responsible for herself. She’s wearing a mask, as we all do, as we age and find that we must start to conform to larger society regardless of one’s own life experience. It was always my intention to leave it to the viewer to decide which side of her face was the mask.

This was done for a school project when I went back to finish my degree at the Savannah College of Art and Design. I had a photo for a long time, grabbed from a newspaper ad. I had always thought it would be a fun one to paint and when given the opportunity in one of my painting classes, I decided it was time. I’ve always enjoyed painting older faces with lots of expression.

This was an acrylic and oil piece done for a magazine. Here is a warrior woman forging her own sword. My thoughts were of the legends of ancient Celtic lore where Brigid, the goddess of the sacred fire would infuse magic with her creativity.

Prodigal Son was conceived as a book cover. It was done digitally using Photoshop and Painter. These types of pieces are usually done at 300 DPI at 12x17.5 inches in size.
Book covers are without a doubt the truest expression of who I am as an artist. The process of creating them is quite different from the process of doing concept painting for a film which are conceived in relationship with certain technical aspects, cost or functionality and are less about your artistic style. A book cover allows a great deal of artistic freedom and IS about your style as an artist. It is about creating one compelling image that captures a story with all its mood, drama and scope. To put it in a film context, it would be about creating the first image a producer or director would want to have to sell their film idea to the studio. It needs to be the wow!
I always try to surprise myself when doing book covers. My sketches are very loose to allow me to explore while painting. It gives me an opportunity to be more adventurous than in any of the other entertainment fields. I love layering with light and color in a painting to create dynamic emotional pieces. Over the years book covers have allowed me to grow and explore different techniques and ultimately find a unique artistic voice.

This image was captured with a Canon EOS 40D 10.1 Megapixel Digital Camera, in June of 2017 after dropping my daughter off at summer camp in San Juan County, Utah. On the way back home I stopped at a historical monument titled 'Newspaper Rock', which is one of the largest known collections of petroglyphs and is part of the 1.35 Million Acre Bears Ears National Monument. The petroglyphs were created by ancestral Puebloan people living, farming, and hunting along the Puerco River. The first carvings were made around 2,000 years ago and a few are as recent as the early 20th century, left by the first modern day explorers of the region.

This was a digital piece I did for a Frankenstein book. Re-animated in the lab of Dr. Frankenstein, the dead man was brought back to life. I wanted to show a more emotional aspect to his sadness of being forced back into a world where he would ultimately face his death once again.

Many of my personal paintings start with a theme from some type of legend. The Lady of the Lake, of course, comes from the King Arthur Legend. The offering of the sword comes only to the worthy, and as one can see, some knight didn’t live up to the standard.

This was an assignment in a poster design class when I went back to school at Savannah College of Art and Design, around 2005. We were asked to do an alternative poster design for a movie, book, or other. In my case, it was the film Children of Men. The medium is mixed; watercolor and a bit of oil over bits of scotch tape.

Sarcasdrake is a digital piece done as a submission for a dragon book. I’ve often wondered about tiny dragons and baby dragons, curious if they were always fierce and how they began to create their hoards. Did they rob and pillage or slowly collect over time? This little baby dragon found a shiny coin and immediately sat upon it to guard in the coming years like those who came before him.

This is a large oil painting I created for a personal project. My goal was to explore ancient legends and put a new twist on them. Originally, Pandora opened the box setting free all kinds of pestilence upon the earth. Maybe Pandora was the tale of a dark twin, whereas the other twin, upon opening the box, would release peace and beauty.

This image was originally created in May 2010 as a moment I captured with my very first digital camera, a Canon Powershot SD1800 7.1 Megapixel Camera, while spending time with my son in our garden. Subsequently, the image was published in the May 2016 issue of The Sun Magazine and was also chosen for a group exhibit in March of 2017 titled 'Honoring Female Utah Artist's' at the Adobe Building in Lehi, Utah where it was printed large format at 24" x 30".
Shadows & reflections are two aesthetics that draw me in when photographing. I think of reflections as the yang (bright) of light and shadows as the yin (dark). The former lets light shine through and the latter blocks it. The lines are blurred sometimes when a reflection is also a shadow and vice versa. As it is with life, most things aren't as they seem, and if they are, they can quickly change. The truth always changes, things are fluid, just like the light when taking photographs.

This was a personal piece. I wanted to create a figure that somewhat represented both life and death—the power of spirit. My friend and fellow artist Chris Rush had just suddenly passed away. His Black Lotus art had a huge impact on this piece. The flower in her hair acknowledges Chris, designed on the day I found out he had suddenly died. Her power is the chain—in terms of what binds us to this earth and can weigh us down or help us fight.

Artist Statement:
The subject was a Battlemech called The Firestarter. I imagined that it had inferno capabilities. Working at FASA Corporation at the time which published BattleTech, I was often working on books set in that world. There are hundreds of Battlemechs, huge mechanical humanoid weapons which roam about the universe waging war and settling scores. I was chosen to paint a cover for Challenge Magazine, as they happened to be doing an article on BattleTech. As a lifelong scout and camper, there’s something about fire. It’s quiet, ominous, and can be quite terrible. I tried to convey a bit of that in this fiery image. The huge ‘Mechs are terrifying in battle. Their ominous size and power convey destruction or salvation depending on which side of the cannons you are on. Is this fellow contemplating rescue or destruction? Only the next moment would tell.

The subject is a valiant mouse. He is a hero. A symbol of noble, earnest and modest means and a character at the heart of the world of CAIRN. He puts his trust in the inherent goodness of his fellow creatures but also wears a blue bead to ward off foes, and keeps his trusty sword close by. Inspired as much by Stuart Little as the creatures of Redwall, Cairn was a setting for storytelling and adventuring. Otters, ground hogs, meerkats, rabbits, and many other player creatures populated the world, created a community and banded together to seek out adventure and to protect their village and families. Al-Suya was the first color piece I did for the game after creating dozens of furry characters. His bold nature may be a bit tentative, but he is reliable and ready for whatever challenges and rewards the world may have for him and his friends.

Most of my life has been spent living with or around many cats. I've always had a fascination with their intellect, personalities, and their ability to offer love and healing to those they live with. Cats are “mystical” in a sense; I see them as being the gatekeepers to a supernatural world. This piece is one of two; each cat holds a small piece to opening a new world. One holds the keys, the other holds the locks. They have the heart of the forest within them – symbolizing their wild nature. It is my intention to leave it to the viewer to interpret where each world leads or what is beyond the keys and locks.

"While we assume dragon's hoards are usually made up of gold and shiny objects, I thought of all the other things they might collect and as it was a book club the commission was for, I thought to add a hoard of books. Since the dragon can't read, it found a captive to read to it. The captive's beard grows longer and longer as the years go by." - Pat morrisey-Lewis

One of my students gifted me a welded metallic dinosaur when I was a professor at John A. Logan College in Carterville, Illinois. I had a picture of a kid on a trike and I thought I could create a composition of the two that would be nice. The poem that goes with the image is as follows:
Summer morning
Cotton candy feelings
Peddling dreams
A boy and his dog.

"I love you", the dragon said as he looked down nervously wringing his hands, not sure of the reply.
Mesmerized, there are no limits to the tilt of her head. The slight glance, the glare with a secret smile.
The sound in her voice, softly spoken. Conducting it all.

From time to time, we are confronted by a piece of artwork that raises a lot of questions. Dear People by artist Drew Tucker is one such work. During a lull in illustration assignments, Tucker was looking to create a study in brighter colors than his favored darker, more somber tones.
Inspired by a sculpture he’d seen, he set about writing down details that could be incorporated into the work, sketching out aspects before laying them down in the original. As to the meaning, the piece represented his thoughts on how mankind and the animal kingdom coexist. His interpretation ended with a blending of the two, haunting but beautiful.

This piece was created for the collaborative show Divine and Sacred featuring Yvette Endrijutzki at Krab Jab Studio in Seattle Washington. My dad had just passed. While I was working on pieces for the show, I watched as my dad slowly deteriorated with the obvious conclusion in the immediate future. The show was about the sacred and divine. My dad was a devout Christian and to him going home was going to heaven.
So, what was on my mind at the time was not only my own connection to family but the idea of home as a sacred home, that is. Not just home being a familiar place with family and friends, but leaning towards a more spiritual home. This theme would continue in several other paintings for this show as well.
This was the last painting I created for the show. I didn’t live in the same town as my dad at the time so I was traveling back and forth quite a bit. Towards the end, I was very sad at not being able to be there. I think the whole series of paintings is dealing with this and the desire to be able to help him in some way. This last painting for the show has him in a field going to a spirit windows/house. It was my attempt at helping him go on. He passed later that night.

As a child, I was heavily influenced by two historical figures. One was the author Daniel Dafoe, whose literature I loved. The other was Alexander von Humboldt, a German naturalist and explorer of the eighteenth and nineteenth century, who traveled extensively in South America.
The idea of being cast away on a remote island always fascinated me. Would I want to find my way back to "civilization", or decide to stay where I am? I think I always leaned towards the later.
A wise person once told me "there is nothing wrong with being lost, it just means you're searching for something".
This piece is part of a three dimensional illustrated story for children.

This was a painting for a Tarot card set I contributed to. I used a buddy as my reference model for the King, and then found what I needed for the butterflies and other embellishments. I designed the head armor and as usual, I paid special attention to lighting and the effects it has visually and emotionally.

This was painted for the 20th anniversary of MAGIC THE GATHERING. In 2014, a bunch of us old school MAGIC artists got together and we all redid an old card. This was my redo of the card Recall. This painting was printed in the 20th anniversary book called THE GATHERING.

m3ta1-11 was a breakthrough piece for me, as it was the first time I diverged from strictly found objects and used additive sculpting to incorporate an element which was important enough to the concept to bring forth from my imagination (the human skull with horns).
While working on this piece I was focusing on how to balance that which makes us human (empathy & compassion) against the need to trudge forward despite the ebbing and flowing of whatever is occurring within us as emotional beings. Emotional connections, while generally considered a good thing, when excessively hyper-focused on can become oppressive. This one reminds me of the need for the pendulum to swing the opposite direction, (those parts of us which function outside of or despite our fundamental connections or emotional wounds), before finding it’s center. I felt with this piece I had achieved an image which may be provocative to the viewer while still maintaining some ambiguity and room for others to fill it with their own stories.
Regardless of medium, the art that I love most draws me in with alluring appeal while simultaneously doing something to repel me. It is confusing and contradictory. I’m intrigued by dichotomies which mirror those found in people and our shared human condition. These things are infinitely complex and at the same time base and primal; depending on your perspective and how you need to see things they can be both, or one or neither. That is what this piece is about to me.

This piece was initially commissioned by a private collector with an interest in a fusion concept involving two previously published illustrations. I decided to depict a scene as derelict and uncomfortable as those two originals had been, only this time replacing what were human skeletal figures with those of Minotaurs in various states of decay.
My depiction of Minotaurs has always included extensive tribal inkings and ritual scarification. Without their intact flesh to consider, I chose to give those characteristic embellishments a supernatural presence in the air immediately surrounding each of them or hovering where they were meant to be when the creature had flesh to hold them.
This final digital montage incorporates selected elements which were photographed throughout the many stages, now hidden, that preceded the finished piece.

The original artwork has a very personal story attached to it. It is the story of my brother, Jerry Howell, aka Smiley, who was a welder. On October 7th, 2014, Anson flew from Seattle to Las Vegas to meet my parents for the first time. That same evening, we were awoken by a local sheriff who came to notify us that my brother had been murdered in our hometown of Port Angeles, Washington.
Anson began creating this artwork while we were in Port Angeles awaiting the sentencing of the individual responsible for my brother’s death. Anson never got to meet my brother but he was all too aware of how our family suffered in the wake of my brother’s death. Anson gave the original artwork to my parents as a gift, which they have proudly displayed on their living room walls ever since.
