Professional Illustrator, photographer and furniture designer since 1992
Artist Drew Tucker first gained fame as one of Magic: The Gathering’s Alpha artists, while a student at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, Washington where he studied illustration and furniture design. During a watercolor class, he was approached by fellow student Sandra Everingham about an art project she was a part of. They were looking for illustrators and Sandra found his work to be unique and exciting. After introductions to Magic art director Jesper Myrfors, he was assigned several pieces in the inaugural set, sending his career in an unanticipated direction.
Since his emergence on the fantasy illustration scene in 1993, Tucker has worked on fantasy, horror game and magazine illustration. From time to time, he saunters off into music and editorial illustration as well. His works have been shown and collected worldwide. Game companies such as Wizards of the Coast, Onyx Path Publishing, Upper Deck, White Wolf, Renegade Games, Fantasy Flight Games, Five Rings Publishing and Paradox Interactive have featured Drew’s works throughout the years. Tucker’s preferred mediums to work in are Oil and Watercolor.
Drew and his wife live in Kirkland, Washington, where he maintains his studio. His schooling includes the aforementioned Cornish College of the Arts (Seattle), earning a BFA from the College of the Arts (Seattle) and an MFA from the School of Visual Arts (New York City). In addition to being an illustrator, Drew was an art professor for several years up until 2018. These days he spends his time in the studio, working on assignments from various game companies as well as private commissions.

This piece was created from a drawing my son had made for me when he was 5 years old.
Twiddling fingers,
Top hat at the ready,
Mississippi showboats at every bend…

One of my students gifted me a welded metallic dinosaur when I was a professor at John A. Logan College in Carterville, Illinois. I had a picture of a kid on a trike and I thought I could create a composition of the two that would be nice. The poem that goes with the image is as follows:
Summer morning
Cotton candy feelings
Peddling dreams
A boy and his dog.

"I love you", the dragon said as he looked down nervously wringing his hands, not sure of the reply.
Mesmerized, there are no limits to the tilt of her head. The slight glance, the glare with a secret smile.
The sound in her voice, softly spoken. Conducting it all.

From time to time, we are confronted by a piece of artwork that raises a lot of questions. Dear People by artist Drew Tucker is one such work. During a lull in illustration assignments, Tucker was looking to create a study in brighter colors than his favored darker, more somber tones.
Inspired by a sculpture he’d seen, he set about writing down details that could be incorporated into the work, sketching out aspects before laying them down in the original. As to the meaning, the piece represented his thoughts on how mankind and the animal kingdom coexist. His interpretation ended with a blending of the two, haunting but beautiful.

Through the mouth of giants we deftly pass not hearing their stories, whispers or prayers,
Their footsteps rustling the ground, churning the twigs and leaves. To no one.

This piece was created for the collaborative show Divine and Sacred featuring Yvette Endrijutzki at Krab Jab Studio in Seattle Washington. My dad had just passed. While I was working on pieces for the show, I watched as my dad slowly deteriorated with the obvious conclusion in the immediate future. The show was about the sacred and divine. My dad was a devout Christian and to him going home was going to heaven.
So, what was on my mind at the time was not only my own connection to family but the idea of home as a sacred home, that is. Not just home being a familiar place with family and friends, but leaning towards a more spiritual home. This theme would continue in several other paintings for this show as well.
This was the last painting I created for the show. I didn’t live in the same town as my dad at the time so I was traveling back and forth quite a bit. Towards the end, I was very sad at not being able to be there. I think the whole series of paintings is dealing with this and the desire to be able to help him in some way. This last painting for the show has him in a field going to a spirit windows/house. It was my attempt at helping him go on. He passed later that night.
